rob's records

Rob Scott owns hella records. Mostly jazz and hip hop rarities. He was born with a green thumb and dusty fingers. That joint, Rob's beat, is the only song he's produced so far (the world is waiting to be blessed once again). However, the records stay in constant rotation; consider him a professional listener. Title: Indo-Jazz Suite
Artist: The Joe Harriott Double Quintet, under the direction of John Mayer
Label: Atlantic
Year: 1966

Five jazz players join with four Indian musicians to create a timeless sound. Tablas bang away to a head nodding 4/4 rhythm, while flute, sitar, and saxophone intertwine melodically over tambura and bass. Muggs, Prince Paul, and a few others have definitely given this album a listen, and for good reason, as there are plenty of open sounds to bite away at with your MPC.

Title: Unreal
Artist: Bloodstone
Label: London
Year: 1973

Alright some of the tracks on this album aren’t anything special. Who cares? These are some of the phattest breaks and that makes it all good. Everybody Needs Love starts with a nice four measure break and then drops some subtle harmonica under a deep, open baseline. Side B keeps your booty shaking throughout. Check The Traffic Cop for some nice vocal samples.

Title: I Am Not Afraid
Artist: Hugh Masekela
Label: Blue Thumb
Year: 1974

You got two options: light up a spliff and kick back, or call your girl or whatever over, cuz you’re not doing shit until the record’s over. Stix Hooper and Joe Sample of the Jazz Crusaders lend Hugh Masekela a hand in laying down one of the most joyful records ever. Thick basslines, intricate hand drum patterns, horn stabs, and subtle keys lace the background while Masekela lets his voice be heard.

Title: Music Inspired by the Lord of the Rings
Artist: Bo Hansson
Label: Charisma
Year: 1972

I don’t know what the fuck to say about this album. It’s crazy. Moog synthesizer tears through songs titled after the chapters in the book. Funky classic rock sounds get arranged in mind-bending multidirectional orchestration. Peanut Butter Wolf managed to grab a loop from this chapter of 70’s obscurity.
